Watch: Couple Outrun Avalanche Near Big Four Ice Cave

The hikers experienced a terrifying avalanche during their Saturday afternoon hike.

A scenic hike quickly turned into a race to survive as Colby Dotson and Ashley Bechard captured cellphone video of an avalanche near Big Four Ice Caves.

“It was like a huge cloud of dust coming down, and I turn around and Ashley was like 30 feet running already,” Dotson told NBC News.

The couple traveled to the Big Four Ice Caves on Mountain Loop Highway in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest on Saturday afternoon.

Although signs warned hikers not to enter the caves, the couple said they decided to take the risk and followed footsteps that led off the main trail. They were just a few feet away from the cave when they heard a loud noise.

“I heard something that sounded like a plane,” Bechard stated. “I just ran. I was like ‘that’s an avalanche,’ and I ran.”

A dozen other hikers ran too, according to the couple.

The Snohomish Sheriff Twitter stated “2 people were inside at the time of the Avalanche. Performed self-rescue & now safe. No injuries. No one else inside. Caves are all clear.”

While none of the hikers were harmed, previous hikers have not been so lucky.

The Big Four Ice Caves are where an 11-year-old girl was killed by a falling boulder of ice in 2010, according to The Seattle Times.
