• Bellingham Bay closed for recreational shellfish harvesting (kpug1170.com) — While Bellingham Bay is now closed to recreational shellfish harvesting because of unsafe biotoxin levels, beaches in Birch Bay and parts of Semiahmoo remain open. Local harvesters should still check the state's online shellfish safety map before heading out, since toxin levels can change quickly and closures may expand with little notice.
   

• Sports/Rec calendar: Oct. 2–11, 2026 (cascadiadaily.com) — Local sports fans and outdoor enthusiasts in and around Birch Bay can choose from a packed Oct. 2–11 schedule, including high school games and community runs. Notably, there's a Birch Bay State Park walk on Friday, Oct. 9 at 1:40 p.m., plus numerous Bellingham-area hikes, bike rides, and festivals you can join throughout the week.
   

• Whatcom County outdoor burn restrictions to be lifted October (whatcom-news.com) — Outdoor burn restrictions in unincorporated Whatcom County end at 8 a.m. on October 1, but open burning remains permanently banned in Birch Bay's urban growth area. Residents can still enjoy legal recreational fires where allowed, and larger burns elsewhere in the county will require permits. Violations can bring at least a $250 fine and possible liability for suppression costs.
