📰 News we're reading

• Caught on camera: The debate over Flock Safety hits the streets of Pierce County (thenewstribune.com) — Bonney Lake has reactivated its Flock license-plate cameras after adjusting them to meet Washington's new privacy law, putting the city squarely in a growing regional debate over AI-driven surveillance. Local police say the system helps find stolen cars and missing people, while nearby Puyallup's experience shows rising public concern about transparency, data sharing, and how much tracking residents are willing to accept.

• Handheld laser welding on the launchpad (thefabricator.com) — A former SpaceX welding engineer has now based his Handheld Laser Institute in Bonney Lake, offering training and safety guidance on rapidly growing handheld laser welding technology. He explains how the tools transformed rocket fabrication, why safety enclosures and strict procedures are essential, and how new welding codes are slowly adapting, giving local fabricators insight into a cutting-edge process operating right in their backyard.
