2 Pedestrians Hit, 1 Killed By Trains Near Sumner, Seattle

Trains were held for nearly two hours after a person was hit and killed near Sumner Station. A second incident stalled trains in Seattle.

SUMNER, WA β€” Delays continued on the tracks late Tuesday morning after northbound and southbound Sounder trains hit pedestrians near Sumner and Seattle. According to Sound Transit, northbound trains were held south of Sumner Station after a train heading from Lakewood to Seattle hit and killed a person around 5:30 a.m.


UPDATE: A person was hit and killed by a train near Kent Tuesday night, marking the third railway incident in 12 hours.

Shuttle buses were sent to Puyallup to help move passengers along the route. At least six northbound trains were held until traffic started moving again after 7:30 a.m. Sound Transit said lingering effects continued into mid-morning, and a southbound Sounder train out of Seattle left the station at 9 a.m. β€” about one hour late. Sound Transit expected a scheduled 10:16 a.m. departure from Lakewood would leave on time.

Delays also affected north line rail commutes after a Sounder train heading from Everett to Seattle struck a man walking along the tracks near Carkeek Park, north of Ballard. According to BNSF, he was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. The train was delayed about an hour and arrived at King Street Station just after 9 a.m.

Tuesday's collisions follow two incidents on Sunday when an Amtrak hit and killed a person on the tracks in Puyallup, and a freight train hit and injured a person near Kent.
