Sumner Takes Big Step Toward Relocating Library

A new library more centrally located will be a community hub, city officials believe.

SUMNER, WA - City officials have taken a major step toward relocating the Sumner Pierce County Library to the downtown area.

On May 7, the Council approved the purchase of a parcel of land along East Main Street across from Fred Meyer. Moving the library into a centrally located and larger building would help meet increasing demand for library services, according to city officials.

The library building along Fryar Avenue was built in the 1970s, and is strained by the more than 130,000 visitors it gets each year. The building also has ongoing maintenance issues, and is often blocked by traffic heading into downtown Sumner.

The city also owns the land the present library is built on. That land has been targeted for a multi-family housing development, placing homes closer to the Sounder station.
