📰 News we're reading

• Chehalis Farmers Market to begin in May (tri-cityherald.com) — Chehalis residents can start shopping the downtown Farmers Market earlier this year, with Tuesday markets running 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. from May 5 through Oct. 27. Saturday markets are postponed, but 27 vendors will offer local foods, plants, and crafts, plus kids’ activities and SNAP and WIC/Senior benefits. Expect new cheeses, Wagyu beef, baked goods, and plenty of garden starts in May.

• Julie McDonald: Saying farewell to Centralia College's most enthusiastic cheerleader (chronline.com) — Longtime Centralia College president Henry “Hank” Kirk, who made his home in Chehalis and championed the city’s historic preservation, has died at 90. Kirk led major growth at Centralia College, created local scholarships and endowments, and opened his Chehalis home, Marietta Manor, for community celebrations. Friends and family will honor his life at a May 9 service.

• Chehalis River Bass Suppression Study To Begin - (nwsportsmanmag.com) — State biologists will soon be electroshocking sections of the Chehalis River around Centralia and Chehalis to remove bass that heavily prey on young Chinook salmon. The pilot study aims to see how reducing nonnative bass affects smolt survival and future salmon runs. Conservation groups are watching closely, since this stretch is a hotspot that may undercut local habitat restoration work.
