📰 News we're reading

1. Everett Mayor assures 'absolutely no reduction' in paratransit service in Community Transit merger talks (lynnwoodtimes.com) — Everett leaders are weighing a merger of Everett Transit with Community Transit that could raise city sales tax to 10.5% while promising no cuts to existing paratransit riders or drivers. Union leaders, riders, and officials are split over taxes, worker protections, and long-term paratransit rules as light rail and major population growth loom, and residents are invited to submit feedback through September.

2. Elevator repair deadline looming, may force some Everett tenants to move (everettpost.com) — Tenants at Artspace Everett Lofts on Hoyt Avenue could lose their federal housing vouchers if the building’s only elevator isn’t fixed by August 31, leaving some disabled residents effectively trapped. HASCO says vouchers will be terminated if HUD standards aren’t met, though staff are helping affected tenants look for compliant housing and may grant limited extensions.

3. Everett police: Man tried to lure pre-teen into minivan with alcohol (kiro7.com) — Everett police arrested a man accused of trying to lure girls ages 11 to 13 into his minivan near Walter E. Hall Park by offering them alcohol. Investigators used license plate readers and nearby cameras to track the vehicle from the park, identify the suspect, and arrest him on W. Casino Road; he’s now booked into Snohomish County Jail for luring a minor.

4. New sales tax for public safety, $20 car tabs approved by County Council (snoho.com) — Everett residents will see a new 0.1% countywide sales tax and a $20 annual car-tab fee aimed at shoring up public safety and road maintenance, especially in unincorporated areas. At an Aug. 12 hearing in Everett, county officials and residents, including former Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson, warned that without new revenue, justice and public safety services could face deep cuts.

5. AquaSox come up short against Tri-City (heraldnet.com) — Everett baseball fans watched the AquaSox fall 12–9 to Tri-City after nearly erasing a 10–1 deficit on the road. Despite 15 hits, including homers from Matthew Ellis and Carlos Jimenez, Everett’s rally came up short, and the team now looks to even the six-game series in Wednesday night’s matchup.
