📰 News we're reading

1. Gig Harbor man and woman in critical condition after carbon monoxide leak in their home (kiro7.com) — Two residents are in critical condition after a carbon monoxide leak in their Gig Harbor home, where firefighters also rescued and stabilized their dog. Local officials are urging residents to check or install carbon monoxide alarms as cooler weather approaches, explaining how the gas forms and outlining key symptoms so Gig Harbor households can catch problems early and stay safe.

2. 'Well-loved' Pierce County splash pad closed for a year won't reopen until 2027 (thenewstribune.com) — Families in Gig Harbor will have to wait until at least Memorial Day 2027 for the city's only splash pad at Skansie Brothers Park to reopen, after bids for repairs came in far over budget. The City Council rejected all proposals, plans to seek new bids tied to the 2027-2028 budget, and will relocate and upgrade the splash pad's control systems to improve reliability.

3. Pierce County News Briefs Sept 9 (tacomaweekly.com) — Gig Harbor's Pierce County Library will close for maintenance Sept. 14–26, with book returns unavailable on-site but Wi‑Fi still accessible and holds automatically extended. The broader Pierce County brief also covers topics from a data-center moratorium and job-training investments to transit to the state fair, public safety updates, and opportunities to serve on local boards and committees.

4. Tacoma BBQ joint gets 55 red points. Here are Pierce Co. food scores for Aug. 31 (thenewstribune.com) — Health inspectors recently cited Tides Tavern on Harborview Drive in Gig Harbor for cooling and cold-holding issues, including ranch dressing stored too deep and too warm, though the restaurant still holds a "Great" grade. The report details how staff corrected problems on-site and warns that repeat violations could trigger a required risk control plan, alongside similar inspections across Pierce County.

5. Federal judge rules in Fish Bowl lawsuit over high school football game injuries (thenewstribune.com) — A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit over injuries to Gig Harbor High School quarterback Koi Calhoun during the 2023 Fish Bowl, finding no evidence the Peninsula School District or coaches encouraged dangerous play. The ruling comes as the district continues safety changes, including moving the annual Gig Harbor–Peninsula rivalry game to Mount Tahoma High School with adjusted scheduling and crowd management.
