SEATTLE, WA - Houghton Beach in Kirkland will be closed for at least a week after tests revealed elevated levels of fecal coliform bacteria in the water. Juanita Beach was closed recently for the same problem.
Seattle-King County Public Health tests water at beaches around the region weekly for contamination. The city of Kirkland will test Houghton Beach again on Monday, but the beach may not open until next Wednesday or even later.
The city has placed signs at Houghton Beach warning visitors of the contaminated water. Health officials attribute the increased bacteria levels to animals like dogs and birds.
