Kirkland Reopens City Playgrounds Thanks To Good Behavior
City officials pointed to high rates of mask use and adherence to physical distancing in allowing city playgrounds to reopen.
KIRKLAND, WA — The Kirkland Parks and Community Services Department reopened city playgrounds Monday, which have been closed for most of the year to prevent coronavirus transmission.
Officials cited the community's cooperation with mask mandates and physical distancing practices in allowing them to move forward.
"We want to thank the public for following public health's guidance regarding mask wearing and social distancing," said Lynn Zwaagstra, the parks department director. "The community's attention to the public health orders has resulted in our ability to reopen these important recreational opportunities."

In a news release, the city said it had also restored regular 10 p.m. closing times at waterfront parks, which had been shortened during the summer to prevent large gatherings. Fencing around docks and piers has been removed at Houghton Beach and Brink Park, and the Houghton parking lot has reopened.
Volleyball courts, basketball courts and athletic fields will remain closed to discourage large group activities.

With restrictions relaxed, the city is urging residents to stay mindful of the rules and avoid scenarios that could lead to potential crowding.
"In order to keep these recreational opportunities open, we need the community to keep up the good work and continue to wear masks and avoid large gatherings," Zwaagstra said. "If you arrive at a playground that has more than five people, please wait until others leave or choose a different park for your recreation."
The parks department added new signage to remind visitors to wear masks, use hand sanitizer and avoid large groups.
