📰 News we're reading
1. Raising Cane's is headed to Lakewood, steps from Chick-fil-A. Construction could start this month (mynorthwest.com) — Lakewood is set to get Pierce County's first Raising Cane's at 10025 Lakewood Drive SW, with state records showing construction could begin October 21 and wrap by late May 2027. The chicken chain will open just down the street from Chick-fil-A, adding another busy drive-thru option while similar projects advance in Puyallup and Burlington.

2. A PGA Tour pro's company is giving this Lakewood golf course a major glow-up (thenewstribune.com) — Oakbrook Golf Club in Lakewood is getting a major upgrade as Tacoma-based TRUE linkswear moves its headquarters into the clubhouse and builds a flagship retail store with modern design and fitting services. The Moore family, which owns Oakbrook, also envisions indoor simulators, event spaces, wellness facilities, and an expanded hangout and dining scene that could turn the tucked-away course into a broader community destination.

3. Elko Casinos Set to Close Nov. 30 as Founder Plans Buyback (casino.com) — Three Lakewood casinos—Chip's, Macau, and Palace—have received WARN notices listing a Nov. 30 closure date, but their owner says it's part of a transfer meant to keep them open and preserve jobs. The Washington State Gambling Commission must still approve the change, so local casino workers and patrons should expect close regulatory scrutiny but no immediate shutdowns if the transition proceeds smoothly.

4. River Ridge girls swimming uses depth to defeat Lakes (thurstonchronicle.com) — A home meet in Lakewood saw the River Ridge girls swim team edge Lakes, 93-86, thanks to standout wins and personal records from swimmers like Rosalie Ponce and Arizona Fouts. The Hawks also dominated key relays and distance events, building momentum as they look ahead to their next meet against Capital on October 13.
