Amtrak Derailment Was The Second In Washington In 2017
Another Amtrak train derailed in Washington state earlier this year.

DUPONT, WA — An Amtrak train derailed in DuPont, Washington, on Monday, spilling rail cars onto the middle of Interstate 5 and reportedly leaving at least three people dead. This wasn't the first Amtrak derailment in 2017 and was the second in Washington state alone.
Amtrak said the train was heading toward Portland, Oregon, and departed Tacoma, Washington, just after 7:15 a.m. Monday, Amtrak schedules showed. Monday was the first day of a new route for Amtrak trains in the area.
The Washington Post reported that from 1976 to 2015, there were an average of 31 derailments a year.

Here are a list of other Amtrak train derailments and crashes this year:
- March. 24, 2017: An Amtrak train traveling from Boston to Washington, D.C. experienced a "minor" derailment while passing through New York Penn Station. It also sideswiped an NJ Transit train. Several minor injuries were reported.
- March 27, 2017: An Amtrak train in Chicago derailed south of the Loop. The low-speed derailment happened as the train entered Union Station and several cars ran off the tracks. No injuries were reported.
- June 26, 2017 — An Amtrak passenger train collided with a van in Trindad, Colorado, killing five people who were in the van. No passengers on the train were hurt.
- July 2, 2017: Four passenger cars of Amtrak Cascades, Train #506, traveling from Eugene-Springfield, Oregon to Seattle, Washington, derailed at Chambers Bay Bridge in Steilacoom, Washington. Amtrak said the train failed to slow down to the required 40 MPH speed limit before crossing a bridge over the bay. More than 250 people were on the train and only minor injuries were reported.

Other major derailments in recent years include:
- March 17, 2008: Amtrak Passenger Train #490 hits a mudslide and derails near Windsor Locks, Connecticut. No injuries were reported but the locomotive derailed.
- March 8, 2009: Amtrak Passenger Train P499-08 derails near Russell, Massachusetts. The second locomotive and four trailing coaches derailed. No injuries were reported.
- Oct. 1, 2012: A lorry hauling cotton struck Amtrak Train 712 near Hanford, California. Three train cars derailed and as many as fifty people were hurt.
- May 12, 2015: Amtrak Northeast Regional Train 188, heading to New York City from Washington, D.C.derails and partially rolls over on its side in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Eight people were killed and more than 200 were hurt.
- Oct. 5, 2015: Amtrak Passenger Train 55 derails in Northfield, Vermont. Four cars derail and the locomotive slid down an embankment, the Federal Railroad Administration said. Twelve people were hurt. Investigators said the train stuck a rock slide.
- April 3, 2016: An Amtrak train carrying more than 300 passengers and traveling more than 100 mph plowed into a backhoe on tracks outside of Philadelphia, killing two workers operating the construction equipment, injuring at least 35 others. The force of the crash derailed the lead engine, crumpled its nose, shattered its windshield and blew out windows in the passengers cars.
- March 14, 2016: — An Amtrak train traveling from Los Angeles, California, to Chicago, Illinois, derailed in Grey County, Kansas, injuring more than 30 people. Five cars derailed.
