The Final Firepit Marshmallow Roast

Our final firepit marshmallow roast ceremony in our first home before our first night sleeping in the condo. We made S'mores that were gluten, dairy, and nut free.

Ten years ago my husband and I got married and followed the ultimate American Dream of purchasing our first home in Newcastle. I remember our real-estate agent showing us the large, beautiful trees in the back yard, which backed up to a forest with May Creek running through it. Her big up-sell on the house was that the fir trees in the back yard would be a great place for a hammock. We never did get a hammock for the yard but my husband did build a nice fire pit that roasted many marshmallows and warmed many friends and family. So, ten years later, it would be only fitting that the last thing that we would do in that house was roast some marshmallows.

As we finished the last bit of cleaning and waited for our new, fabulous renters to arrive, we all sat around the fire with sticks and marshmallows in hand. My husband asked us to share a memory from the house. We all just sat there silent, focusing on our marshmallows. Despite their silence, that house was all my kids knew. Every memory they had since the day they were born. The kids said they'd remember playing by the mossy rock in the backyard. I, silently, was thinking about all the details that brought us to this point. Details I'll get into more later. For now, lets just focus on the treat.

Once the marshmallows were crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside, pretty much how I was feeling at that moment, we assembled our special S’mores and enjoyed every last bite before leaving for our house, as residents, for a final time.

We work around a few food sensitivities in our family, mostly cow's milk. Our 6 year old son has been off gluten, chicken eggs, soy for the past year. He's now off dairy too. I post recipes I create to share with friends on my blog, The Best Friend Food Project. There you will find the S'mores: No Gluten, No Dairy, No Nuts, that we made.

P.S. In an ironic twist, one of the first things our new renters did was to hang a hammock between the previously mentioned fir trees.
