Changing Season Presents New Picture Of Outdoor Community

Winter approaches, and nestling in your warm home is enjoyable for most. But, for the homeless the question remains-what will I do now?

A chill in the air, rain falling, fog, darkened evenings approaching earlier, visible color changing upon the tree leaves, and often strong winds that feel overpowering. Signs that winter is approaching. Many evenings you will find yourself cherishing moments while nestled within the walls of your home enjoying time with family. Hot coffee, cocoa, a good book, crackling fire, and delicious meals. The thought will make you smile. However for many, these changing elements create fear, frustration, sadness, and the lingering, unanswered question of where do I go when there is no place to go remains unanswered.

Years ago when I first took the steps of performing community service throughout the Pacific Northwest, I didn't have a clear picture of what was happening in the city. I missed the simple signs in varied areas that indicated help was needed. When I began to volunteer with organizations closer to home things were put on my radar. Communities in Schools was the first organization that made my thought process change. Previously, when observing children walking from a local school on windy days without coats, I viewed them from a parental perspective. Why don't they have their coats on? The idea was planted in my mind soon, that the reason could be because they did not have one. School analytical information showed many were in need. While I enjoy the comfort of my home, one look out the window reminds me on many days that others may be battling the elements. A recent conversation reminded me of just how appreciative others are of those providing community service.

"Mike," a local homeless man let me know just how much this meant to him. A previous winter when the temperature had dropped in to the 20's, and snow blanketed the area, he was one of many wandering the streets trying to determine where he could find shelter. Many businesses were closed, libraries, and places that previously provided shelter did not offer that option this time. Businesses that managed to open were functioning with minimal staff, as many could not make it from outlying areas in their vehicles, and bus transportation was limited. Moisture invaded the hole filled shoes he wore as he walked around trying to decide where he could go. " I didn't know what I was going to do?" My eyes filled with tears as I listened, and imagined what his fear felt like. "As I looked towards the old Renton Chamber of Commerce building, I saw hope. I saw two vehicles in that parking lot. A Subaru and your truck," he continued staring at me. I quietly trembled.

The building has been used for years to provide social services to the community. It had been utilized as a soup kitchen, food bank, and on this evening a weather shelter. My husband had a discussion with me earlier that day about the importance of going down to ensure the building would be open that afternoon. "I am not sure anyone else can make it," he argued. I have to admit I was fearful that he might not be able to make it safely. But, in the end we realized the most important thing was to try. As I looked at "Mike," I was thankful the decision had been made to do just that. That evening over 200 people were accommodated in that facility to escape the elements.

Communities in Schools put local concerns on my radar. Many donate items, and time during the holiday season, but help is needed year round. Food, clothing, shelter...are always in demand. I have been reminded whatever your contribution, no matter the size or amount-it is needed and appreciated. In fact, the impact of that generosity remains on the heart of some for years to come.
