King County Projects 46% Voter Turnout For 2021 General Election

RENTON, WA — King County Elections sent out ballots for the 2021 General Election this week, and officials project 46 percent of the county's nearly 1.4 million registered voters will fill them out and return them by Election Day, Nov 2. This year's projections are a little lower than turnout was in 2019 (49%) but higher than in 2017 (43%).

While non-Presidential elections tend to attract fewer voters, this year's election will still have major ramifications on the local level, with 332 candidates seeking various offices.

Key races include candidates vying for King County Executive, four seats on the Metropolitan King County Council, several city council seats, school board positions, and hotly contested races for mayor and city attorney in Seattle.

"Local elections have an incredible impact on our communities," said Julie Wise, director of King County Elections. "While Presidential elections get the most buzz and excitement, it's at the local level that decisions are made about our schools, parks, roads, transit, criminal justice system, and so much more. This is voters' opportunity to use their voice to help shape the future of their community, and I hope to see voters turnout and speak up."

Voters who were registered by Oct. 13 should receive a ballot in their mailbox no later than Monday, Oct. 18. Residents who do not have a ballot in hand by then should contact King County Elections at 206-296-8683.

More than 70 drop boxes are already open across the county and will remain available for drop-offs until polls close at 8 p.m. on Nov. 2. For those planning to return ballots by mail, the Friday before Election Day is the last day recommended to send them to ensure an on-time postmark.

Residents who still need to register or update their information can do so online until Oct. 25, and in-person through Election Day.
