📰 News we're reading

1. Washington weekly drug overdose tracker Aug. 24-28 (everettpost.com) — King County's latest weekly overdose report includes the death of a 35-year-old man whose fatal methamphetamine-related intoxication occurred outdoors in Renton and was ruled an accident. The list, covering Aug. 24–28, details similar drug-related deaths across Seattle, Federal Way, and Kent, underscoring how fentanyl and methamphetamine continue to drive a regional public health crisis.

2. Join Wizards of the Coast and TCGplayer for a Charity Tournament (wizards.com) — A major Magic: The Gathering charity showdown is coming to Wizards of the Coast's Renton headquarters on September 16, with $50,000 pledged to Extra Life and MagiKids. Local fans can tune in online, bid on rare collectibles via eBay Live, and donate directly to support children's health and youth gaming programs.

3. Maverick WA closes 2 cardrooms, lays off 238 workers (seattletimes.com) — Renton residents are affected as Maverick Washington's financial troubles led to the earlier closure of the Silver Dollar cardroom in town, alongside several other Seattle-area sites. Now the company plans to shut two more Tukwila cardrooms on Nov. 1, laying off 238 workers and highlighting the mounting strain on local gaming and hospitality jobs across South King County.

4. King County buys Cedar River asphalt plant site for $14M (seattlered.com) — King County has bought the Cedar River asphalt plant site along SR 169, preserving open space at what officials call a gateway into Renton instead of allowing heavy industry there. The $14 million deal, brokered without new taxes, ends a years-long fight and directly affects a key approach route many Renton drivers use daily.
