Spring Pulls Up More Than Flowers, It Revives Pain
Spring means fun: beautiful days, warmer temperatures, awakening flowers and activities...But, it can bring pain when death is involved.
Spring is a time of year we look forward to, after battling the elements of winter. Longer days filled with plenty of light, sunshine warming our skin, flowers emerging from the soil which has kept them hidden for too long, and laughter that is heard once more as individuals participate in outdoor activities more. Pure joy, and time to make plans for the projects we want to complete. While the excitement can be limitless, this time of year can bring about sadness as well due to events that have occurred. Ones that tug at your heart, cause pain, bring back restless nights, creating a remembrance for me of a local murder. A special young woman to my family, Kathy Chou.
Thirteen years ago this spring, a beautiful soul, and member of the Renton community departed our world at the hands of a killer, named Ezekiel James Watkins. A man who believed that a young woman was causing problems in a new relationship he had established. He tricked her in to meeting up in a local woodsy area near his home, murdered her, buried her there, and for a year watched many who loved and wished daily for her safe return search for her. The trial eventually occurs, sentencing happens, parents and friends comfort each other, and then what? The commotion that has captivated everyone for so long disappears. People move on with their lives, seemingly forgetting about the tragedy which has occurred. It is no longer front page news, and another tragedy moves to the forefront.
Some of us remain in the area, Renton is our community, and we silently ride by the tragedy location on many occasions because it is near our homes. The scene of the crime, still feels painful, despite newly built homes now inhabiting the location. These buildings can never cover the brutality that has scarred many. Things will never be the same in some ways.

Nearly 3 women are killed daily by intimate partners. Many suffer in silence while attempting to navigate challenging relationships. Others are unaware just how quickly things can change and situations can get out of control. Regardless of what may be happening in a situation, no one deserves to be mistreated. While the list of victims has become much too long, we must continue to speak up, make others aware when we learn of potentially dangerous situations.
So, as promised to Kathy’s mother after her passing, many of us who loved Kathy will continue to do positive things, never forget her, and each year on the anniversary of her passing call out her name. A name worth remembering.
