SAMMAMISH, WA — About two months after announcing she would not run for reelection in 2019, Mayor Christie Malchow announced Friday morning that she actually will run this year.

Why? There's still a lot she wants to do, she said.

"There is still much to accomplish from our infrastructure and congestion issues (and how we wisely address these), to phase 2 of the development regulations, to pending environmental considerations (like stormwater & the urban forestry plan), to a comp plan update on the horizon, to new parks, to the financial challenges heading our way that will have to be cautiously managed and so much more," she wrote on her Facebook page Friday morning.

In late March, Malchow said she wouldn't run, saying the job has been "taxing" on her and her family. But she said Friday that she got a ton of calls, emails, and letters asking her to run — and her family gave her the go-ahead.

Malchow first won the Position 2 seat on Council in 2015, taking over from Nancy Whitten. She defeated challenger Mark Cross with 58 percent of the vote. She was elected mayor unanimously on Jan. 2, 2018.
