SAMMAMISH – If you’d like to put your green thumb on public display, make sure you apply for one of 58 plots in the city’s brand-new community garden. Applications will be available online (www.ci.sammamish.wa.us) and at City Hall on Monday, April 1.
The deadline for application submission is April 26. If there are more applicants than plots, a lottery will be employed on April 27 to determine the recipients. The city will charge $50 per year for use of the community garden plots.
“This has been on our to-do list for quite a while,” City Manager Ben Yazici said. “It’s going to be fun to scratch this off the list and watch people grow flowers and vegetables near City Hall.”
The garden, which is still under construction, is located in the northwest corner of the Lower Commons and has a projected opening date of May 6. Most of the plots will be four feet by eight feet. A half-dozen plots intended for people with disabilities will be a bit smaller at three feet by eight feet.
Residents who want to take a look at the garden are encouraged to attend the city’s Earth Day Celebration in the Lower Commons on April 20, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. In addition to music, vendors and other festivities, attendees will be able to see the location, scale and orientation of the garden.
The garden is located at 600 222nd Place S.E., right next to the small, Lower Commons parking lot. To reach the parking lot from 228th Avenue, turn west on Southeast Fourth Street, and then south on 222nd Place Southeast.
