Eastside Catholic Football Team Named Academic State Champs

Football team just one of many EC athletic teams that excel in the classroom.

Eastside High School's varsity football has been named the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association's Class 3A Academic State Champions for Fall 2011.

EC's varsity football team has an average GPA of 3.51, earning them top spot in their class.

"It's a pretty great accomplishment," said Eastide Catholic's Senior Athletic Director Scott Garvis.

Garvis said that the football team best represents what it means to be scholar athletes.

"They're working hard in the classroom and on the field," Garvis said.

Garvis credits the athletic department and Eastside Catholic's teachers with keeping academics foremost in the player's minds, something the school strives to do.

"It's just what's expected," Garvis said.

Garvis pointed out that many of the school's athletic teams maintain consistently high grades.

According to the school the volleyball team has a 3.73 GPA, the girl's soccer team has a 3.75 GPA, the boy's cross country team has a 3.69 GPA while the girl's has a 3.7 GPA, and the boy's golf team has a 3.53 GPA.

"We're proud of all of our teams," Garvis said.
