Once On This Island is a delightful musical fable with book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty. It is based on Rosa Guy’s novel My Love, My Love, which in turn was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid. The musical is set in Haiti on the night of a violent tropical storm. A young girl cries out in fear as the storm rages on and a group of peasants try to sooth and divert her by acting out a story about the power of love. Inherent in the tale are the serious themes of class distinction, racial prejudice and the universal issues which affect us all – love, anger, forgiveness, faith, maturity, and death. In the end, the message is to spread their story.
