No right-of-way is needed from the Bergsma property as a result of removing the sidewalk and landscaping along that property for the design of the Newport Way enhancements.
As part of the adopted corridor concept for the Newport Way project, a 10-foot strip of right-of-way from the City-owned Bergsma property would be needed to complete a sidewalk and landscaping strip.

At a Council Study Session in September, Council heard from community members who were opposed to taking more right-of-way for these improvements. Following public input and discussion, the Council requested that staff evaluate if any right-of-way would be needed if the sidewalk and landscaping strip were removed from the corridor concept’s original plan.
Staff concluded that by removing the sidewalk and landscaping strip from the original plans, but keeping space in the current footprint for utilities (street lights, hydrants, etc.), it would eliminate the need to take any additional right-of-way from the Bergsma property. Learn more in this memo.
