Skier Dies In Avalanche At Snoqualmie Pass: Police

The skier went missing before 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

SNOQUALMIE PASS, WA - A 36-year-old man from Snoqualmie died in an avalanche on Tuesday while attempting to ski in the back country near Snoqualmie Pass, according to the King County Sheriff's Office. The man was skiing near Red Mountain near Cle Elum Lake. The skier had told a friend to contact authorities if he didn't make contact by 1 p.m. Tuesday.

At around 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, the friend called authorities. Search and rescue crews went to the area and found his car in a parking lot. Crews searched the area Tuesday night, and found his body after 9 p.m. near an avalanche debris field. Authorities say he was found wearing hiking boots with his skis still in his backpack.

This is at least the fourth skier death this season. In mid-December, a skier died at the Alpental ski area near Snoqualmie Pass after falling into a tree well. On Dec. 28, 32-year-old Adam Roberts, of Randle, died in an avalanche near the White Pass Ski Area southeast of Mt. Rainier.

In January, a 55-year-0ld man from Woodinville died while skiing at the Stevens Pass Nordic Center.

According to the Northwest Avalanche Center, avalanche danger is "considerable" along the entire Cascade range in Washington.
