For many, one of the most enjoyable aspects of traveling is sampling the local cuisine. Travel affords you the opportunity to expand your horizons and try new things. As enjoyable as traveling may be, however, it can also be expensive and time-consuming. Conversely, you don’t need to actually travel to expand your culinary horizons. Here are four drinks that are global favorites you can sample right at home.

Mate

Mate is a somewhat bitter drink that has a taste resembling a strong, herbal, unsweetened green tea. It is very popular in South America, particularly in Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina and parts of Brazil. It is made by steeping the leaves of the yerba mate plant in hot water. Traditionally, it is served in hollowed-out gourds, and drunk with a silver straw that also serves as a sieve.

Sangria

Sangria is a traditional drink that hails from Spain. The basic ingredients of sangria are red wine and fruit, but you can also add other ingredients like your favorite juice or even a bit of brandy, rum or vodka. In the summer, you can drop in frozen berries or citrus fruits for a deliciously chill beverage and in the winter you can simmer wine with citrus fruits and serve it warm. The secret to sangria is letting it sit for around four hours until the wine becomes infused with all the flavors of the fruit.
