Doug Baldwin Asks U.S. Senate For Criminal Justice Reform

Baldwin and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell sent the letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday.

SEATTLE, WA - Seahawks receiver Doug Baldwin and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell sent a letter Monday to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee asking senators to support a proposed law that would reform sentencing guidelines.

Baldwin and Goodell's letter is in support of the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act of 2017, which is being sponsored by U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa. The law would give judges leeway to shorten prison sentences for nonviolent drug offenders, but possibly increase sentences for violent and career criminals.

Most of the Baldwin-Goodell letter deals with how social issues affect NFL players and the communities where they are based. For example, Baldwin's teammate, Michael Bennett, was held at gunpoint by Las Vegas police on Aug. 26, and Bennett believes he was racially profiled.
