📰 News we're reading

1. Teen accused of firing on undercover Seattle officers can't be charged as an adult under WA law, prosecutors say (mynorthwest.com) — A 17-year-old is facing multiple felony charges in Seattle juvenile court after allegedly firing on undercover officers during a South Seattle investigation, and cannot be tried as an adult under Washington law. The teen is also under investigation for robberies tied to several well-known Seattle locations, while two adult suspects face separate charges as forensic work continues.

2. Seattle to scale back Pike Place Market pedestrian zone in October (fox13seattle.com) — Seattle plans to scale back Pike Place Market's pedestrian-only zone starting in October, reopening the cobblestone street to more vehicles except for limited midday closures on weekends and special events. SDOT will review the proposal Aug. 26 as vendors, residents, and visitors weigh safety, emergency access, and how the change could affect foot traffic through the market this fall and winter.

3. Highline school board demands funding, protections as Port of Seattle weighs airport expansion (king5.com) — Highline School Board is pressing the Port of Seattle to tie any expansion of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to stronger funding and noise protections for nearby schools under the flight path. District leaders and residents describe constant aircraft noise, while the port points to existing insulation investments and an ongoing environmental review that will shape the airport's long-term growth plans.

4. 17-year-old charged in 'ambush' shooting at SPD officers during undercover operation, arrest attempt (kiro7.com) — Seattle prosecutors have charged a 17-year-old as a minor after investigators say he and two others opened fire on undercover SPD officers during an Aug. 12 operation in South Seattle, leading to a chase and crash. The teen also remains under investigation in separate robbery and attempted robbery cases tied to Kerry Park, Queen Anne, and Beacon Hill, with additional charges possible after forensic testing.
