Kent Resident Lives her Dream by Helping Others

Tamika D. Brown, B.S.N., R.N., does her best work in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Valley Medical Center

Tamika D. Brown, BSN, RN, is living her dream. The Kent resident and 2014 Dallas Nursing Institute (DNI) graduate works full time as a registered nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Valley Medical Center in Renton, WA. “This was my dream position even before entering nursing school. I have a deep passion for the NICU, as I was once a NICU parent.”

As a result of the work she does, Brown was nominated for, and won the D.A.I.S.Y Award for Extraordinary Nurses in 2017, an award created by the DAISY Foundation to recognize and honor “the super-human work nurses do for patients and families every day.”

Brown also serves as the president of the Seattle Chapter of Black Nurses Rock. The largest minority nursing association in the country, Black Nurses Rock’s mission is to foster professional growth and development. Brown’s chapter implements the mission while also providing H.E.A.L.T.H services to vulnerable populations in the communities of King, Snohomish, Pierce and Whatcom counties of the State of Washington. Among the services the chapter offers are addiction and abuse resources and life crisis counseling.

“Without my education at Dallas Nursing Institute, I would not be able to live out my current dream come true,” Brown explained. “My education at DNI changed my life.”
