Key Speaker At Seattle International Women's Day Rally A Man

New York Daily News columnist and police brutality activist Shaun King will speak at the Seattle International Women's Day Rally.

SEATTLE, WA - "One damn day and men still gotta talk?"

That was just one person's reaction to news that a key speaker at Seattle's International Women's Day rally on Wednesday will be a man. New York Daily News columnist Shaun King - who chronicles police brutality issues - will speak at the Wednesday rally, along with women activists from Seattle.

The women activists speaking at the rally include Nicole Grant of the Martin Luther King Labor Council, Black Lives Matter Activist Nikkita Oliver, Morgan Beach from the Seattle Women's Commission, and Millie Kennedy from that anti-DAPL movement.

Even still, the irony of a male speaker headlining a women's day event was too much for some. Seattle Councilwoman Kshama Sawant tweeted about King's appearance at the rally saying that she is "so honored" to have him - others did not share that sentiment.

The rally begins at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at Westlake Park. The event was organized by Sawant, Socialist Alternative, the Martin Luther King Jr. County Labor Council, the Transit Riders Union, the Seattle Women's Commission, UAW Local 4121, Socialist Students. According to the event Facebook page, about 900 people have indicated they will attend.
