KeyArena Renovation May Delay Seattle NHL Team: Report
City officials want a team on the ice for the 2020-21 season, but the arena may not be done in time for that to be possible.

SEATTLE, WA - The arrival of an NHL team in Seattle may be delayed for up to a year, according to a new report, because of how long it will take to renovate KeyArena. The developers of KeyArena want a team on the ice as soon as 2020, but the arena may not be completed until part way through the 2020-21 season.
The possible delay was reported Monday on NHL.com. NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly told the site KeyArena won't be done until November 2020. But Daly also had good news. He said that the NHL Board of Governors expects to approve Seattle's team when it meets beginning Dec. 3 in Georgia.
In early October, members of the group bringing the NHL team to Seattle - including Mayor Jenny Durkan. Jerry Bruckheimer, David Bonderman, Tod Leiweke, Tim Leiweke, David Wright, and Francesca Bodie - presented plans for the renovated KeyArena to the NHL Board of Governors.

The city of Seattle and developer Oak View Group have entered into a partnership to redevelop Key Arena. Tickets for the new team went on sale in March, and over 30,000 paid to reserve season tickets. The team still doesn't have a name yet.
