Last Day Of September Brings Puget Sound Another Soaker: Forecast
An uncommon "baroclinic leaf" pattern is setting up Puget Sound for one last soaking as we say goodbye to September.

SEATTLE — A unique weather band is settling over Western Washington, promising one more run of wet weather before October arrives. According to the National Weather Service, September's rain totals are already well above normal in Puget Sound, and the last day of the month is looking to run up the numbers.
After a dry July & August, September has been wet. Here is the current monthly rain totals and the percentage of normal for the month. More rain Thurs. Bellingham 3.95" (197% of normal) Quillayute 8.37" (188%) Hoquiam 4.62" (186%) Seattle 2.42" (150%) Olympia 2.79" (137%) #wawx

Forecasters expect Wednesday's scattered showers will intensify through Thursday, bringing more widespread rain across the region. While meteorologists do not expect river flooding or other major impacts from the storm, the weather pattern itself — called a "baroclinic leaf" — is rather unusual. As the system nears, forecasters say it will take on more of a comma shape.
By popular demand: update on the "baroclinic leaf" yesterday over Gulf of AK. It's taken on a familiar frontal system structure as low pressure intensifies. As the low continues to deepen, we'll likely see that "comma" shape as it approaches B.C. tonight. Forecast: still🌧️#wawx pic.twitter.com/1x56Y2UIua

As for winds: The strongest gusts should pass by late Wednesday evening, but breezy conditions will stick around into Thursday. Since many trees still have foliage weighing them down, the high winds could make for a few headaches, including downed branches and power outages. Overnight gusts were forecast to peak at 25 mph around Seattle and as high as 50 mph further north around Bellingham.

By all accounts, Thursday is likely to be a soaker as moderate to heavy rain moves inland, bringing most Puget sound communities up to a half-inch of precipitation by 5 p.m. The coast and mountains will be even wetter.
September began dry and warm. It'll end anything but that. It'll be a wet and breezy day tomorrow. If you haven't already, clear those storm drains of all the newly fallen leaves. And, if you're new to the area, welcome to autumn in Western Washington! 🍃 🌧️#wawx pic.twitter.com/RDqGVOha1z
