Report: Fultz Received Illegal Payments At UW

An investigation found that numerous college athletes were receiving illegal perks, including University of Washington star Makelle Fultz.

SEATTLE, WA - An investigation published by Yahoo Sports found that Markelle Fultz received $10,000 during his one-year stay with the University of Washington Huskies basketball team. Fultz allegedly received the payment from an agent during the 2016-17 season. He left UW after one season to become the NBA's top draft pick and now plays for the Philadelphia 76ers.

The report cites violations by numerous Division 1 NCAA programs, including Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky, and many others. The "impermissible benefits" came from loans provided by ASM Sports, an agency that worked with NBA players and is now the subject of a federal investigation.

NCAA President Mark Emmert released a statement in response: "These allegations, if true, point to systematic failures that must be fixed and fixed now if we want college sports in America. Simply put, people who engage in this kind of behavior have no place in college sports. They are an affront to all those who play by the rules."
