Seattle Snowstorm May Close Out November: Puget Sound Forecast

The Cascades will get walloped with snow this weekend, and the lowlands may get their own taste of winter as temperatures dip next week.

Forecasters expect temperatures for much of next week will be cold enough to allow for any precipitation to fall as snow.

SEATTLE — Mountain snow will complicate post-Thanksgiving travel over the passes this weekend, and Puget Sound could see its first snow event of the season not long after.

Another round of rain is forecast to sweep across the lowlands Saturday, intensifying in the evening and lasting into Sunday. It will be breezy, too, with peak wind gusts hitting 20 to 30 mph in most areas and stronger up north and along the coast. The rain should begin to taper off Sunday afternoon, but snow will continue to impact travel over the Cascades.

A winter storm warning will remain in effect above 1,500 feet through Monday morning. Another round of heavy mountain snow will not be far behind, with Snoqualmie Pass potentially picking up another couple of feet between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday evening.

According to the latest forecasts, a chance for lowland snow could be in the cards nearly every day next week, starting with Monday, when snow levels first fall below 1,000 feet. With precipitation expected to kick up again Tuesday through Thursday, and temperatures turning frigid late in the week, the National Weather Service said lowland areas from SeaTac north have a fair shot to see at least minor accumulations next week, if not something more substantial.

"With the much cooler airmass that is forecast to set up across the Pacific Northwest early next week, the door will be open to accumulating lowland snow with any precipitation," NWS Seattle wrote Friday. "This pattern looks to be [the] best chance of accumulating lowland snow thus far this season."

There are still a few days left to firm things up, and forecast models are still in disagreement on the specifics, with some allowing for less than an inch falling mid-week and others predicting a whole lot more.

"Ensemble systems highlighting the potential for lowland locations to pick up 1 inch or more of snow accumulation at between 50% and 90%, and a 20% to 55% chance of greater than 4 inches of snow accumulation especially for the favored areas of western Whatcom County, the northern Olympic Peninsula, and Hood Canal," NWS Seattle said. "In addition, overnight low temperatures are expected to dip to near freezing most nights next week, highlighting the potential for any untreated road surfaces to refreeze overnight."
