Shorewood Baseball to Host Military Appreciation Night
The Shorewood baseball team is gearing up for a rivalry game against Shorecrest - and a night of honor for military personnel.
Wyatt Tonkin has been coaching baseball for over 25 years. He has seen hundreds of players come and go through his programs, almost all who go on to lead lives other than playing baseball.
Friday afternoon, Tonkin will honor the career that several of his former players have chosen.
Shorewood plays rival Shorecrest on Friday in a game that doubles as an honorary night to members of the military.

Tonkin has a first-class seat to the experiences of a former player of his pursuing a career in the armed forces. Tonkin's son Tyler, who played for him at Shorewood, is now an Aviator in the U.S. Navy.
Tonkin said the inspiration for the night came after he noticed that there seemed to be a lack of appreciation for the sacrifices military members make.

"I kind of noticed that sometimes we don't quite realize what sacrifices kids made going into the armed forces," Tonkin said. "I thought we'd just do a little tribute."
Tonkin said the emphasis on honoraring the military will be minimal, including the Navy Sea Scouts Color Guard and having two of his former players - and current Marines - throw out the first pitch.
The game is scheduled for 4 pm at Shorewood High School in Shoreline.
