📰 News we're reading

1. As Spokane enters long-term recovery post fires, case managers will be able to help (inlander.com) — Spokane-area residents recovering from this summer's devastating wildfires can now connect with newly hired disaster case managers through the Spokane Region Long Term Recovery Group for long-term help rebuilding homes and lives. Funded by Innovia Foundation, Spokane County, and faith-based partners, these case managers will guide families through grants, housing solutions, and unmet-needs roundtables so assistance continues for months and years, not just the initial crisis.

2. SFD's 8th Annual Kids Jr Firefighter Academy (spokanecity.org) — Families in Spokane can bring kids to a free Junior Firefighter Academy this Saturday, Sept. 12, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at River Park Square and Post Street downtown. Children can tour fire trucks, practice hands-only CPR, try a scavenger hunt, meet Sparky and Spokane's arson dog, and earn a Jr Firefighter certificate with no registration required.

3. Fire relief distribution center at Northtown Mall may be closing soon (kxly920.com subscription) — Spokane fire survivors still have at least another week to pick up free supplies at the Northtown Mall relief distribution center, which remains well stocked but is seeing fewer visitors. Spokane County Emergency Management and Adventist Community Services plan to redirect remaining donations to other wildfire-affected communities so towels, bedding, cookware, and other essentials continue reaching people who need them.

4. Spokane City Council approves emergency tenant protections for fire victims (krem.com) — Spokane renters affected by the recent Spokane Complex Fires now have temporary protection from eviction for nonpayment of rent under an emergency ordinance passed 5-2 by the City Council. Income-eligible tenants who can document disaster-related income loss gain time to secure aid, and the new rules also create a standing framework for future emergencies in Spokane.

5. Washington awards $7.45 million to repair flood, wildfire and infrastructure damage (komonews.com) — Spokane will receive a $1 million state loan to repair fire damage at the Northside Landfill, including restoring vegetation and electrical systems for gas and monitoring equipment. The funding is part of a broader $7.45 million Public Works Board package helping Washington communities fix roads, bridges, wastewater systems, and other infrastructure hit by floods and wildfires.
