FEMA deadline approaching for North Central West Virginia flooding cleanup (wowktv.com) — Buckhannon residents hit by this summer’s flooding have until tonight, Oct. 3, at 11:59 p.m. to apply for FEMA individual assistance, with an Upshur County Disaster Recovery Center open on East Main Street. The state emergency management division urges anyone affected in Upshur and nearby counties to file now or visit local recovery sites, including outreach at the Wesleyan football game.

3. WVWC to recognize 2026 alumni award winners during Founders Day (mybuckhannon.com) — West Virginia Wesleyan College will honor its 2026 alumni award winners during Founders Day on Oct. 9, with a free public convocation in Wesley Chapel. Several alumni with deep Upshur County ties, plus the Upshur Parish House for its Buckhannon and Rock Cave outreach, will be recognized for service, leadership, and community impact. Residents are invited back to campus to celebrate and reconnect.

Governor honors Tammie Strong for flood-relief work (mybuckhannon.com) — Upshur County volunteer Tammie Strong was publicly honored in Buckhannon by Governor Patrick Morrisey for leading a flood-relief distribution center after July’s storms. Residents in Upshur and three other counties now have until Oct. 17 to apply for FEMA disaster assistance, with local recovery centers open in Buckhannon and Weston to help families navigate the process.

5. Man charged with attempting to use a minor in filming sexually explicit conduct in Upshur County (wdtv.com) — Buckhannon police arrested a 55-year-old man after receiving a tip that he was having sexually explicit online conversations with someone believed to be a 14-year-old girl. He faces charges of soliciting a minor via computer and attempting to use a minor in filming sexually explicit conduct, and is being held on a $25,000 cash-only bond at Tygart Valley Regional Jail.
