📰 News we're reading

1. County addressing problems with 107 tax tickets (newsandsentinel.com) — Wood County officials in Parkersburg are scrambling to fix a paperwork error that kept about 107 property owners from receiving tax tickets for several years. Because the state never sent key redemption forms, those properties weren't marked taxable, and owners could now face multiple years of bills at once in 2027. County leaders say it's not taxpayers' fault and are pressing Charleston for relief.

2. Moore presents Parkersburg with $1 million for garage replacement (wtap.com) — Parkersburg just received a symbolic $1 million in federal Community Project Funding to help replace its aging, 55-year-old municipal services garage. City leaders say the current building can't house all the equipment, so this "down payment" will kick-start planning for a larger facility, though more money and time will be needed to finish the project.

3. Ohio man sentenced for federal drug crime in West Virginia (wvnstv.com) — A Columbus man has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for supplying meth that was sold in the Parkersburg area of Wood County. Investigators say he moved cartel-sourced drugs that were redistributed in Parkersburg and beyond. Local agencies, including the Parkersburg Violent Crimes and Narcotics Task Force and Wood County Sheriff's Office, were credited for their work.

4. County Commissioners To Meet Virtually Next Week To Discuss Issues Facing Largest Counties (wvpublic.org) — County leaders from West Virginia's largest counties will meet virtually next week to talk about soaring jail costs and strained EMS and healthcare systems. While the call itself is closed to the public, Parkersburg will host the association's annual in-person meeting October 4–6, bringing key decision-makers here to continue those discussions that affect Wood County residents.

5. THIS IS HOME: Dental practice in St. Marys marks 80 years in business (wtap.com) — An 80-year-old family dental practice in St. Marys is celebrating three generations of care that now extend into Parkersburg. One brother opened a pain-management office in Parkersburg, and a granddaughter runs Smith Orthodontics there, continuing the family's focus on Mid-Ohio Valley patients. Relatives hope the next generation will keep the tradition going in local offices.
