📰 News we're reading

1. Parkersburg City Council sends food truck ordinance back to Planning Commission (newsandsentinel.com) — Parkersburg City Council has sent a proposed food truck ordinance back to the Municipal Planning Commission after vendors and a council member raised concerns about operating hours, distance rules and generator requirements. Council also narrowly rejected a small business incubator grant program, while advancing PFAS water treatment funding for the Parkersburg Utility Board. These decisions could shape where and how local food trucks operate and what support new businesses receive.

2. Parkersburg moves closer to breaking ground on PFAS water treatment upgrade (wtap.com) — Parkersburg's Utility Board is preparing to start a $25.5 million PFAS treatment upgrade that will bring the city's drinking water into compliance with new federal limits. Funded through Chemours money, a state loan and settlement funds, the project adds granular activated carbon filtration and should take about two years once bids open Sept. 1. City Council has already advanced key financing ordinances.

3. Dils named for YMCA honor (newsandsentinel.com) — The YMCA of Parkersburg has named local attorney Jan Dils as its 2027 Heart of Our Community Award recipient, honoring her long-standing service and support for the Mid-Ohio Valley. Born and raised in Parkersburg, Dils grew up using YMCA programs and later founded a law firm that now serves clients nationwide. Proceeds from the March 3 dinner in Vienna will support YMCA youth, health and community programs.

4. West Virginia's mysterious island will glow by candlelight for two nights this fall (wvexplorer.com) — Blennerhassett Island's Mansion by Candlelight is returning Oct. 9–10, with sternwheeler departures tied closely to the Greater Parkersburg tourism scene and some times already sold out. You'll ride from Belpre to the island for candlelit tours, period music, dancing, wagon rides, and an optional Harvest Supper, all while learning how this island near Parkersburg became entangled with Aaron Burr and early American history. It's a rare chance to experience local history by lantern light.
