Prairie Farms Dairy To Close Two Shullsburg Facilities, Cut Nearly 100 Jobs

SHULLSBURG, WI — Prairie Farms Dairy, Inc. has filed two separate facility closure notices with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development affecting nearly 100 workers in Shullsburg, a Lafayette County city of about 1,300 people.

The notices, both received by the state on July 20, cover Shullsburg Creamery, where 43 workers will be affected starting July 20, and White Hill Cheese, where 54 workers will be affected starting Aug. 14.

Both facilities are classified under cheese and dairy product manufacturing and wholesaling.

Wisconsin's WARN Act requires businesses laying off workers to give the state advance written notice so the Department of Workforce Development can coordinate rapid response services, including pre-layoff information sessions, resume and interview workshops, and referrals to the Wisconsin Job Center network.

The notices do not indicate a reason for the closures, and the number of workers ultimately affected may differ from what was reported.

The Shullsburg closures were among five new layoff notices filed with the state this month.

Also included in July's filings are Centers for Independence-MCFI Home Care in Milwaukee, cutting 43 elder and disability care jobs starting October 31; PPD, doing business as Thermo Fisher Scientific, in Middleton, reducing its nanotechnology research workforce by 69 starting September 28; and GW Mireles Inc., a Milwaukee restaurant, closing and cutting 26 jobs starting September 1.
