• Diver discovers 1,000-year-old dugout canoe in southeastern Wisconsin lake (wpr.org) — A longtime Beaver Dam diver, Mark Schachtner, recently discovered a roughly 1,000-year-old dugout canoe while exploring Pewaukee Lake, making one of Wisconsin’s oldest known watercraft finds. State archaeologists and tribal leaders say the intact vessel likely belonged to Indigenous people of the Late Woodland period, and it will remain protected on the lakebed out of respect for Native Nations’ wishes.
