Food For The Locals: Klee's Out On A Limb Acres

Candy Klee, who owns Klee's Out on a Limb Acres with her husband Omer, believe locally grown food provides a unique experience.

And for them, picking your own or buying from their roadside stand is a great experience.

They sell everything from pears to apple trees, gooseberries to currants, and raspberries to rhubarb. They also have their own bees and sell the honey. But their antique apples are quite a draw.

"I once had an older man who came to us to pick apples," Candy said. "He asked if we had any russetted apples. And I said, we do. The man started getting teary eyed."

Russet apples have a nutty smell, but are super sweet. A lot of grocers don't carry them because they look rutty and aren't the beauty queen of the apple world like the Granny Smith and the red delicious.

Another woman who brought her grandchildren to pick apples comes back year after year. Her grandsons love the outdoors. She said it's so quiet back there and you can just shut out the rest of the world.

"She's come back and every year the boys ask when they will get to pick apples," Candy said.

So buying food locally, isn't just about the food. It's also about the food experience.
