Lt. Gary Larsen, of the Caledonia Police Department, said they believe that the SUV, which was being driven by Beech, was traveling westbound on Six Mile Road when Hess, who was traveling eastbound, crossed centerline and sideswiped Beech. Hess’s car continued eastbound in the westbound and hit a mini-van head-on, which was driven by Schluechtermann.

"At this point, I would be hesitant to say that the woman (Schluechtermann) was ejected," Wall said. "We're not sure if she was ejected, but we think she may have been thrown around within the vehicle and some passersby pulled her out."

Wall said some people tried to help the crash victims, but they left before police arrived on scene. One may have been an off-duty police officer with another police department, but Wall said he was still trying to confirm that detail.

"If people were there, we would love for people to come forward," Wall said. "We've talked to some witnesses and both of the people involved and their statements are conflicting with physical evidence."

Police continue to investigate the crash.

*This version corrects an earlier version that should have indicated that Hess crossed the centerline, clipped Beech's SUV and crashed head on into Schluechtermann.
