HILLEL ACADEMY TO HOLD TORAH FAIR, APRIL 30th

School-wide program bridges curriculum connections between Jewish culture and Milwaukee community

Milwaukee’s Hillel Academy will be holding a school-wide Torah Fair on April 30, 2015. The fair will showcase the work of kindergarten through eighth grade students, reflecting literacy, design, and technology skills they have gleaned throughout the year.

Artist and consultant, Jackie Redlich has worked with students and staff to produce a display of work connecting a high level of graphic design, art and written content and showcasing the logic and sequential skills that are utilized in the study of the Judaic and general studies subjects.

The event will be open to the community and will seek to explore the teachings of Torah, the central concept of Jewish tradition, in a way that can be accessed by those from all ages and walks of life. Student projects cover topics such as holiday customs and meals, the processing of parchment and the Kabbalistic explanations behind the study of sacred texts, biblical scenes and the deeper meanings behind commandments and Judaic law.

The displays will include student-led interactive components and hands-on expressions and models of their in-class learning. This project will reflect the literacy and technology skills of the students as well as their creative work. Synthesizing connections between Judaic studies and general studies concepts is the central focuses of Hillel Academy’s curricular philosophy. The Torah Fair is an opportunity to provide the community with a tangible example of that concept, as well as stimulate student focus and creative interpretation of their studies.
