Green Bay's Hotel Northland Receives Historic Restoration Award

On Tuesday, October 15, 2019, the Wisconsin Historical Society will present Hotel Northland with the Board of Curator Historic Restoration Award for their careful restoration of the historic hotel.

The presentation will be held at Hotel Northland, 304 N. Adams Street, Green Bay from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. Attendees will include Kenny Didier, general manager of Northland Hotel and Eric Genrich, Green Bay Mayor, Daina Penkiunas, state historic preservation officer for the Wisconsin Historical Society as well as Christian Overland, Ruth and Hartley Barker director for the Wisconsin Historical Society.

“They have done a meticulous job of carefully restoring woodwork, plasterwork, mosaic tile floors, chandeliers and coffered ceilings in the lobby and ballroom,” said Penkiunas. “The entire brick and stucco exterior have also been restored with brand new copper clad marquees, mounted above the entrance to replicate what was there originally.”

Green Bay’s Northland Hotel was designed by prominent Milwaukee architect Herbert Tullgren for hotelier Walter Schroeder in 1924 at a cost of $1,000,000. The 9-story hotel had 260 guest rooms before a 1946 addition added another 105. The hotel was a social center in downtown Green Bay that hosted numerous banquets, dances, and football fans during its 55 years of use. The hotel re-opened in 2019 after this restoration.

Each year, the Wisconsin Historical Society’s governing Board of Curators recognizes individuals and organizations for meritorious work in areas relating to the Society’s mission. The Board of Curators is made up of thirty-seven elected and appointed members from across the state.
