University Of Wisconsin - Green Bay: First-Ever Jerry Dell Award Focuses On Photography And National Estuarine Reserve System (NERR)

Do you know a student who loves photography? The dean’s office of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences is seeking applications for first annual, newly-revised Jerry Dell Award.

The Jerry Dell award is an interdisciplinary initiative connecting UW-Green Bay’s fine arts with the region’s forthcoming National Estuarine Reserve System (NERR). Green Bay is the world’s largest freshwater estuary, and the NERR will be supported in part by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Former UW-Green Bay professor Jerry Dell was an artist and photographer who sought to capture humankind’s imprint on, and intersections with, the natural world. In the spirit of that vision, The Jerry Dell award will support student artistic endeavors that document and explore our past, present, and future interactions with our region’s waters and watershed—a resource that shapes our identity just as much as we shape it.

This year’s award will focus on photography, specifically in connection with designated areas of the National Estuarine Reserve System. The recipient will, during the spring, summer, and fall semesters, develop a collection of photographs of areas in the proposed NERR that capture humankind’s imprint on, and intersections with, the natural world humankind’s imprint on, and intersections with, the natural world. The finished collection of photographs will then become part of “The Jerry Dell Collection” at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Application due date: February 19 , 2022

Application process: Please email a letter of application and brief portfolio of photographs to Dean Chuck Rybak, College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences by February 19, 2022. (rybakc@uwgb.edu)

Award: An award of $1100 will be granted for work to be completed during the spring, summer and fall semesters of 2022. The final collection of photos is due for submission before finals week of the Fall 2022 semester.
