"The value of a man's life is measured by the number of people whose lives he has affected positively." Aaron J. Maier 11/12/85 - 09/14/14

“We lost an amazing person with a positively infectious personality to a battle with colon cancer on Sunday, September 14, 2014. He was doing his best to fight for over two years. There were ups and there were downs in his course of treatment. But one thing is for sure...Aaron remained the level-headed, witty, care-free kind of guy that he has always been.

Aaron was only 28-years-old. But if you were to see a list of the things he had accomplished, the places he had been, the people he had met, you would think he was drastically older. He was able to do so much because he lived life with no regrets. If there was an opportunity to create lasting memories in good company - you’d find Aaron there.

Consistent with Aaron’s last wishes, the Aaron John Maier Memorial Fund, Inc. has been established to receive and distribute tax-deductible, charitable contributions in his name for cancer research, as well as to provide college scholarships to deserving graduating seniors at Greendale High School in his hometown of Greendale, Wisconsin.

He meant so much to so many of us...giving back in his remembrance is the least we can do.

Our friend forever.”

Obituary: The Aaron J. Maier Memorial Foundation was established to honor the memory of Aaron Maier, who passed away from colon cancer in September of 2014.

Aaron John Maier, 28, of Lincoln Park, Illinois, died in Greendale, Wisconsin, Sunday, September 14, 2014 after a courageous battle with colon cancer. Aaron’s parents, Teresa (Davel) Maier of Greendale and Peter Maier of Milwaukee, and his beloved brother and best friend Lee Maier, were with him at the time of his death.

Aaron was born November 12, 1985. This was Aaron’s second battle with cancer, having beaten leukemia at just 23 months old with the support of caregivers at Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee, the support of the MACC Fund, and the companionship of Ted, his beloved teddy bear.

Aaron’s zest for life and ability to shake off adversity were ever present. During his time at Greendale High School, he devoted himself to academics and the football program, where he was bestowed the honor of captain for his senior season, graduating in 2004. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was a loyal fan of all things Badgers and an enthusiastic member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

Aaron graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology. He went on to work for Northwestern Mutual Financial Services in Milwaukee before migrating to Chicago, IL, where he then worked for the Minimum Continuing Legal Education Board of the Supreme Court of Illinois until shortly before the time of his death.

Aaron maintained a continuous thirst for adventure and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his many friends and family. He greatly enjoyed travel, music, recreational sports and spirited nights out on the town. Even after his diagnosis of colon cancer in February of 2012, he spent the last years of his life living to the fullest, never letting his disease overcome his endlessly positive attitude. Aaron lived every day by his personal creed: “The value of a man’s life is measured by the number of people whose lives he has affected positively.” By that measure, his all-too-short life was invaluable and the immense impact he has had on others will forever honor his memory. Aaron’s final selfless act was donating his body to the Medical College of Wisconsin for medical education and research with the hope of helping someone in the future.

While Aaron will be deeply missed, his indomitable spirit will live on through the hundreds of friends and family members that will never forget him.

~Inaugural Aaron J. Maier Memorial Scholarship 2015~

“Kamilah Lay - winner of the inaugural Aaron J. Maier Memorial Scholarship! On Friday, June 12th, 2015 we (Lee Maier and Tess Maier, pictured with Kamilah Lay, center) had the honor of awarding the inaugural Aaron J. Maier Memorial Scholarship to a graduating senior of Greendale High School. Congratulations to Kamilah Lay!

With an exceptional list of honors and activities both inside and outside the classroom, including First Stage Theater Academy’s Teen of the Year and four years of High Honor Roll, Kamilah was more than qualified for this award. Yet, it was her personal essay that ultimately won us over, especially her recognition of Aaron’s legacy:

“The life Aaron lived reminds us to make the most of our time here. Thank you for the chance to receive the Aaron J. Maier Memorial Scholarship, which motivates me to keep Aaron’s memory alive and to remind others about the inspiring life that Aaron led.”

Kamilah will be attending Illinois Wesleyan University where she will be pursuing a Music Theatre BFA, with aspirations to make her way to a Broadway stage and eventually pursue an MFA in Theatre Education. It is through the generosity of our donors that this scholarship is possible. Please consider making any donation you can to ensure we are able to continue honoring Aaron’s legacy through this incredible scholarship!”
