Greenfield School District Will Require Masks

GREENFIELD, WI — The Greenfield School Board voted Monday to make masks mandatory for all people in the Greenfield School District.

The return to face coverings during school is a reversal from what had been planned in July when the School Board voted to let a mandatory mask mandate expire. After Monday's decision, students, staff and visitors will have to wear a mask when they go back to school in less than a week.

The Board voted to make masks a requirement for all. At a future meeting, the Board will consider how to safely transition away from masks being a requirement, according to Katie Kuchenreuther, communications coordinator for the District.

The topic of masks in schools is something school districts across the area have had to grapple with. As of late, Oak Creek-Franklin School District will not require masks. Greendale Schools will only require masks for elementary school students. The Franklin Public School District will discuss the possibility as well.

Greenfield's return to masks comes as an alignment with the recommendations from multiple health agencies, local, state and federal. The Greenfield Health Department recently signed on to a letter urging schools to reconsider masks.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services and the CDC also highly recommend masks be worn indoors for all K-12 schools in areas of high spread. Most of Wisconsin is at a high risk of spread.

As the COVID-19 delta variant spreads and infects more, health authorities have been taking measures to combat the renewed virus surge.
