Kindred Owners Seek to Close Facility Formerly Known as Mt. Carmel

As many as 400 employees could be without a job, and 200 residents forced to relocate if Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation shutters its facility at the corner of South 60th Street and West Layton Avenue in Greenfield next year.

Kindred, formerly known as Mt. Carmel, announced Thursday in a letter to patients and family members that it had requested permission from the Department of Health Services to close, WISN first reported Thursday afternoon.

Kindred leases the facility from Ventas and a “joint decision was made between the landlord and Kindred to close the facility,” Kindred’s District Vice President Tia Bowe wrote in the letter. The Greenfield facility’s “size, age and design is no longer consistent with the current consumer preferences and needs for today’s health care delivery system.” 

Kindred’s closure cannot come until at least 120 days from the date the Department of Health Services approves its resident relocation plan. Greenfield Mayor Michael Neitzke said he believed the closing would occur in the next 6 to 9 months.

“Certainly, the well being of the over 200 residents of our community is paramount,” Neitzke said. “Mt. Carmel is a community within our community. I know many of these folks. They need to be properly cared for.

“Additionally, I'm told, there are about 400 employees whose jobs are at risk. This is potentially life changing for them as well.”

Kindred sits on about 25 acres right along I-894 and just minutes from the busy shopping corridors of 27th and 76th Street. The land could possibly become a key area for redevelopment.
