Experience, Determination Propel Hudson Gymnast To State

Amanda Baker will represent Hudson High School in three events and the all-around competition.

It is often said that attitude is a little thing that can make a big difference. For ’s Amanda Baker, this has gone especially far in the realm of gymnastics.  On Friday, Baker will represent the Raiders at the WIAA State Gymnastics meet.

Baker advanced by placing third in three events and fourth in the all-around competition at the WIAA sectional meet which was held Feb. 24 in Chippewa Falls.

According to Hudson’s assistant coach, Silvia Rosales, who is in her first season with the Hudson program, it is Baker’s strong work ethic and passion for her sport has led her to the high level of competition.

“On top of her sheer determination, Amanda has a can-do attitude in the gym which makes her a pleasure to coach," Rosales said. "She is open to new ideas and has little fear in attempting new skills. Because of these, she has continued to train new skills all season, which has prepared her for anything during a meet, so she has a large repertoire of skills to choose from when she is competing."

Baker, a junior, tied for fourth in the all-around competition at sectionals with a score of 35.150.  She achieved this by scoring a strong 9.200 on the floor exercise, 8.425 on the balance beam, 8.850 on the vault and 8.675 on the uneven bars.

Rosales said that is was Baker’s solid performances at all skills, along with her clean routine, that allowed her to get minimal deductions to maximize her score on each event.

But Baker is no stranger to success. She has competed on the varsity level since her freshman campaign, and just a season ago, she also qualified for the state meet. It is this experience, Rosales believes, that will propel Baker to an even higher level.

Baker is an all-around athlete, having qualified for the state meet in both gymnastics and diving; two sports that truly complement each other.

Rosales has seen the progress and development of the young gymnast, but has full confidence that the junior will have a strong showing.

“I have no doubt that she will have another great meet," Rosales said. "She has been consistent throughout the entire year, doesn't usually let nerves get to her when the pressure is on, so I fully anticipate a solid performance from her.”

While attitude may be a small thing that gets underestimated, it has been a pertinent asset that has led to endless possibilities for a young athlete from Hudson.

And as Coach Rosales said, “Amanda can go anywhere from here.”
