Hudson Varsity Girls Tennis Defeats Menomonie

Despite the heat, the Hudson Varsity Girls Tennis team competed for a 6-1 win home over Menomonie on Thursday afternoon.

It was the First of September and the first day of school, but it felt like a mid-summer’s day when the varsity girls tennis squad defeated Menomonie 6-1 at home in 90 degree heat.

Among the six victories were solid performances by No. 1 singles player Morgan Van Allen, with 6-4, 6-1 sweep of her Menomonie competitor. At No. 2 singles, senior co-captain Rachael Knoke beat out her competition while No.1 doubles partners Casey Fall and Jenny Fassbinder won 6-1, 6-0 in the most dominant victory of the match.

Still, the match was closer than one might think.

“It looked like it was going to be 4-3, but then we got two wins we didn’t expect,” said Susan Dahl, longtime tennis parent and Head Coach Dave Dahl's wife.

Head Coach Dave Dahl echoed a similar sentiment.

“When you hear 6-1 it sounds like we kind of dominated the match but really, we had close matches in most of the spots. Our one doubles was pretty dominant but other than that, a lot of tight matches, a lot of long matches, and we just kind of prevailed in the end.”

This win marks a high point in the midst of what was expected to be a difficult season.

“The team lost six seniors. It might be a rebuilding year, but really, they’re doing pretty well considering the losses,” said Jaimie Fall, mother of senior Casey Fall.

The team currently stands at an overall record of 12-7.

“We’re in a spot now where we got some matches; we know we can be competitive,” Coach Dahl said.

With the 6-1 win under their belt, the team is only looking to improve.

“We’ve got plenty to work on. Consistency is always an issue at this level of tennis. [We’ll work on] movement, footwork – all of those basic things that you can never work on enough,” Coach Dahl said. “Keep them intense and keep the focus.”

But for the moment, Dahl is pleased with his team’s effort.

“It was a good team win,” he said after the final match had been played.

Hudson’s varsity girls tennis team squares off next against River Falls on the road on Tuesday, Sept. 6. Action stats at 4 p.m.
