Man Shot in Chest at Strawberry Drive Home Dies at Regions Hospital

Hudson Police and St. Croix EMS responded to a gunshot report at a home on Strawberry Drive just after 12:30 p.m. A man was airlifted from Burton Field and later died at Regions Hospital.

UPDATE (4:42 p.m.): Detective Eric Atkinson of the Hudson Police Department contacted Patch and provided some basic information about today's incident.

According to Atkinson, Jeffrey R. Kenall took a shotgun into the woods near his home and shot himself in the chest. Kenall's wife called 911 at 12:21 p.m. and officers were on the scene within three minutes of being dispatched.

Kenall's home, 866B Strawberry Dr., is in within the Hudson city limits, but the wooded area where the incident occurred is just across the limit in the Town of Hudson.

Atkinson says the motivation for the shooting is unknown at this time, but a joint investigation between the St. Croix County Sheriff's Department and the Hudson Police Department is still underway.

UPDATE (4:30 p.m.): The Hudson Star-Observer is reporting that the man has died at Regions Hospital and that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted, according to a police report.

UPDATE (4:20 p.m.): A woman who lives on Strawberry Lane contacted Patch to inform us that the incident occured at 866B Strawberry Drive. It is the address is where is based.

According to the Hudson Patch Places Directory, Hudworth Homes is a home building company based out of an example house at 866-B Strawberry Drive. Since 1958, the company has built more than 1,500 homes for homebuyers in the St. Croix River Valley of Wisconsin and Minnesota. It is a family-owned company handed down through three generations and business owner Jeff Kenall has been in the housing construction business since 1977.

UPDATE (1:45 p.m.): EMS, police and fire crews assisted in the transport of the victim to a LifeLink helicopter at Burton Field.

EMS crews were working to stabilize the victim before airlifting.

Hudson Police Sgt. Glen Hartman was on the scene at Burton Field and said it was "too early to say anything" regarding the details of what happened.

Hartman said the department would be releasing more details in about an hour.

UPDATE (12:55 p.m.): Hudson Police and St. Croix EMS are responding to a gunshot reported at a home on Strawberry Drive. 

Police and EMS are at a scene on Strawberry Drive, where a man has a gunshot wound to his chest. Paramedics are working to help him. A helicopter landing zone is being set up at to evacuate the man to a Twin Cities hospital.

Mary Ellen Volin, who lives on Strawberry Drive just 150 yards up a hill from the scene, said this sort of commotion is very unusual for her neighborhood. 

"We've been here 21 years and there's never been anything like this before," Volin said.

She said she didn't hear a gunshot, but her dogs went crazy when several police cars started racing past the house.
